And now for the 'fur' kids:

Hallway pet block!

Mud & cat puke ...

... and again no pictures(sorry - the camera is upstairs). I just wanted to type this up quick and get on with my evening routine. The last couple of days have been interesting so I thought I would share with my few readers. I know I've been slack about updating but my Mommy Blog is not the only one suffering, my Simming Blog has also seen no real traffic.

So about the mud: Today was mud day for my younger two. First off it's warm today, which is wonderful, but(isn't there always a but) it also means that mud season aka Spring is just around the corner. So this morning we were almost to school when little M fell into the mud - I sent her home with K to get changed and popped into the office at school to let them know that M& K would be late. I then dropped A off and walked the dog. When I got home M's shoes and boots were in the mud room so I knew she was home. Turns out K had gotten her home and changed only to have her trip and fall into mud again just before they got to the school so she had to bring her back again and my Mom told her to just leave M home and get to school.

Not long before lunch break stared I got a call from the school that K was dizzy and hungry and crying and wanting to come home so I told them to send both K & A home and that I would be keeping them home for the afternoon. A had a week of dizziness from some virus not long ago so I thought that was it but K seems to be recovering just fine so I think it may have been PMS more than anything else.

Once school would have been out A went to play up the street at a friend's house but came home after a couple hours covered in mud(I think he fell in it on purpose several times - he's that kind of boy). So he had to shower and change clothes before he went back over with a warning of no more playing in the mud. Then he lost track of the time and no one at his friend's house thought to send him home so I had to go get him for supper. Ah well, at least he had fun.

As for the cat puke - I am transitioning our kitty M to raw feeding like the dog is being fed. S has now been raw fed for about a year and I am thrilled with how good she looks. We recently had dental work done on the cat and I feel he needs to be switched over so he can keep the rest of his teeth. The problem is switching cats is way trickier than switching a dog. Cats cannot be tough loved, you cannot starve a cat into submission because they will starve themselves to death. This defies all sane logic because cats are Obligate Carnivores and need meat to live but what can you do?

For the first 4 or 5 days I though he was doing great and switching easily - then we had the two days of puke. I think I've figured out what the problem was but now I have to start over almost from step one again with him. M also still thinks I should feed him at 2am because I used to feed him at 2am - now I feed him at 5am because 2am feedings are insane. Unfortunately he is still convinced that I want nothing more than to feed him at 2am and so starts then every day walking over me and "Mrr"ing at me to feed him.

Any guesses as to how long it will take him to give up this insane idea that 2am is feeding time would be greatly appreciated - I'm not sure how many more mornings I can take 3 hours of being tromped on and "Mrr"ed at. All I can say is that it's a good thing I get to take naps when I want!!

Okay that is it for now - I'll no doubt post my usual Spring rant about the bad dog owners that don't pick up their dog poo sometime soon - maybe with pictures!

I blame Television ...

Long time no update - but it's pretty much life as usual around here so there just wasn't much to say. I am very much enjoying having my Mom here(and I'm not just saying that because she keeps the bathroom and kitchen clean and does other cleaning). My other reason is some of the good conversations we have.

This is where my post title comes in. Mom and I were talking about how before 8 months ago she never knew about raw feeding(for those of you who don't know it's feeding your dog raw meat, raw bone and raw organ meats as their diet). She also never knew about wraps to carry your baby in until I tied one on her when M was 9 months old and let her carry M in it. She said she wishes she had known about these things years ago and couldn't figure out why she hadn't. So we talked about that and I think I have it figured out!

It's television's fault!

Most of the time people get their information from TV - they see something on TV and then they find out more about it. How often do you see things about breastfeeding, cloth diapering, baby wearing or raw feeding on TV? You Don't! When TV talks about children it shows us children in need, kids that need extra help in school and jokes about all the stuff that babies need. I think we all forget that TV isn't some wonderful free entertainment - it's a business. We pay for our TV access and the TV channels sell commercial time to companies so they can make money and the companies only advertise so they can make money. I would say in most cases TV is one big giant commercial(yes even the shows - they are selling the actors and writers and often also have product placement).

So we aren't told about breastfeeding except offhandedly "When you can't breastfeed feed your baby this." The companies will admit breastfeeding is best but then promote the hell out of the formula they are feeding. Once your children are bigger they then play on your insecurity and will tell you to give your kids meal replacement stuff - so the formula sell never really stops. Don't even get me started by how babies are portrayed in popular TV shows! They don't want you to think too much about breastfeeding because no one makes any money off the woman who breast feeds. Unless you count the nursing bras and breast pads but no one is advertising those are they?

We aren't told about cloth diapering either and if you talk to most women they have the idea there are no more cloth diapers out there - I certainly thought cloth diapers were a thing of the past with my first child. There are lots of places to get cloth diapers still - you can even get cloth diaper service in most cities! However, if you want them you have to search a bit to find them - I have never seen cloth diapers on TV as anything other than a passing joke. How sad. So we now have a whole new generation of girls that if they think of cloth at all for their future babies they think it's gross and a lot more work, which is not true. Again the profit margin just isn't there for the big companies that play ball on our TVs so no one is advertising cloth diapers.

When is comes to babies all we seem to hear about is all the stuff we need for them - I've found after raising three babies myself that all you really need is a wrap, a good all terrain stroller for longer walks, a crib, and a bouncy chair. Even the stroller is really not needed if you wear your baby until it can walk well and keep the wrap with you to carry the toddler once s/he gets tired. I liked having a stroller for longer walks though(over 3km) or walks where I was taking the older kids somewhere and we had stuff with us - but even then a wagon makes more sense as it has more uses. We never hear about baby wearing on TV though because the people and companies that make baby carriers(and I'm talking wraps, ring slings, pouches, and many more not snugglis or backpacks) are not million dollar corporations - they are often stay at home/work at home Moms that don't have much of a profit margin and certainly don't have a huge advertising budget.

I have never once seen a reference to raw feeding dogs and cats on TV. All sorts of dog food and cat food commercials from companies foisting off their 'balanced' dry and wet foods as healthy and wonderful for our pets. I can tell you now they aren't - today's commercial dog foods that we see advertised on TV are about as wonderful for our dogs as McDonald's/Wendy's/Burger King/Diary Queen are for us. The slightly better dog foods that are grain free(at least with no corn of wheat in them) can be found at better pet food/supply stores but in my eyes are only a few steps up the ladder. So more like Swiss Chalet or another higher end restaurant that normally serves salads and veggies with their meals instead of just fries and pop. Even still if you think about it you wouldn't want to eat all take out or dine in meals every single day for the rest of your life, so why are we feeding our pets this way?

I know all the things I do are not things you see on TV - at least not anymore. I walk my kids to school, I walk my dog(and pick up after her if she poos!), I cook my children lunch almost every day, I breastfed(all of my children and extend breastfed my last), I cloth diapered(2 of my 3 children), I wore my last two babies and would have worn my first had I had access to more information, and now I raw feed my dog. I talk to anyone who will listen to me about these things and try to educate and inform and sometimes I am actually heard but not nearly often enough and it makes me sad.

Don't just take my word for it though, here's some links - educate yourselves!!

3am and me ...

Lately it seems like 3am really really loves me, it must because I see it on my watch more often than I would ever care to if I was given a choice. I mean really, leave me alone 3am we're just not working :)

Why am I up at 3am almost everyday?

What happens is this, I wake up and look at my watch(which is my bedside alarm clock since I put it on my bedside table when I go to bed) - 2:45am/2:58am/3:00am/3:15am - It's all 3am to me. I realize I don't have to get up for 2 more hours but I have to use the bathroom so I get up and go upstairs to use the bathroom.

The cat thinks "Oh! She's up she must want to give me food!!" so he follows me and mrrs at me and carries on. If I don't feed him he will walk on me for the next 2 hours until I get up at 5am and feed him - so I feed him.

The dog sees the cat go upstairs and decides she has to pee as well so waits at the door for me to let her out. She won't just go out and pee and then come right back though, no, not my dog. She has to look around and check things out and won't come at all until she feels like it. I don't want to stand around and freeze while I'm waiting for her so I find something to do. Usually I empty the dishwasher and put away the dishes. One night I cleaned up the mud room. I will also check my menu and pull out meat that needs thawing. Usually once I'm done that the dog is willing to be bribed back into the house and I can go back to bed.

With all this going on I end up being up for about 10 minutes instead of maybe 2 minutes(if only I could just take care of ME at 3am) - I climb back into bed and go back to sleep until 5am when I get up for another 10 minutes to make tea and a bagel for my hard working man who has to leave for work at 6am. Back in bed I sleep until my watch wakes me at 7am when I get to wake up everyone else, Yay.

I don't have much love for 5am or 7am either but 3am seems to have chosen me for some weird reason - maybe it's the way my hair looks at 3am that is extra fetching to the time. /sigh/ Well if it's 3am EST you know what I'm doing - putting away dishes.

On permanence ...

I was thinking today about how long I've lived in this house and in this city - it's been 10 1/2 years in this house and more like 11 or 12 years in this city. Now that may not seem like a big deal to anyone else but let me tell you - it's the longest I've lived anywhere in my entire life. I've also been happier here than anywhere in my life.

The reason I'm bringing this up is because when I was walking today I realized I have memories attached to a lot of the places I walk by and a few I don't walk by that often. There is a wooden bridge near my home that arches over the railway tracks; J drove me over that same bumpy bridge when I was in labour with little M, now every time we go over it the kids all yell "Labour Bridge!! Aaaaa!" LOL because ever since that day I've said "I can't believe you took me over this bridge when I was in labour!"

I have other memories of other places - there's the spot I buried two of my pet rats back when I was going to college here. There's the spot I kissed K's father for the first time. The first place J ever took K & I when we met(her swim lessons). All sorts of memories.

Now of course there is a downside to all this permanence - I'm often unsure of just how much time has passed from one event to another. My life is so very much the same year after year that a few years down the line when I try to think "How long has it been?" I often draw a blank - it could be 3 years or it could be 7 or 8.

All this pondering aside(I do have funny thoughts); Christmas went well - I would include pics but they are the same as most Xmas pics are; kid with wrapped gift, kid opening gift, kid looking happy about gift, rinse and repeat. The kids were all happy about their gifts. I got a DS and the two Brain Age games that I have been playing everyday, I'm slowly improving my scores. I also got a new vacuum(yes I was happy about that) which has picked up so much dirt the first couple times I've used it I almost went into shock - dirt and enough hair to make more animals. I also got a new Stephen King book "Duma Key"(which I finished in about 3 days) and a few other things that I liked but slip my mind at the moment.

Mom is back with us after a short stay at her parent's house(she and her father don't get along, mostly due to the fact he's a huge chauvinist pig and she won't take guff from any man) but again we are happy to have her. Mom is a great influence on me because although I know she is in constant pain she still hops around once or twice a day and cleans something - it reminds me I have no excuses since I am not in constant pain. I could complain of a larger than average lazy bone but that's really no excuse and I know it. So things have been getting done. I still wish we had a little more space so she could have a room of her own and room to get her stuff out of storage but, alas, we have what we have and not a square foot more.

All in all I had a good 2008 - other than the aborted adoption of Bobby(and I'm sure he has found a good forever home) nothing too horrid happened. We got S and she's grown to be a lovely dog(we'll've owned her for one year exactly on Jan 12th) and even though we could use some training classes I'm not sure when I'll have that kind of money just laying around, things keep coming up. I got to go on a few train trips with the kids which was cool and lots of walks with S which is good for me. The kids are all another year older but none of them are causing me too much trouble, yet. I gotta say I'm pretty darn lucky and I know it.

Happy New year everyone - I'll do a new update again soon.

It's snowing ...

We're expecting a lot of snow and I had to shovel half way thru because K's Grandparents came and stole her away for the next week or so(yes she will not be here on Christmas Day - her choice, she wants to be back for her BFF's birthday.

I decided to post because it's been a while and I'm just enjoying being indoors - the wind chill is pretty nasty out there and my winter coat is in the shop being fixed up for this winter(I can get it tomorrow). I also left my fave winter hat(the one with earflaps) at S's last puppy play date and am waiting to hear back from them if they have found it. Thankfully I still have my scarf that I can actually cover my entire face with and see through well enough to walk :) I bet I look super spooky LOL.

So I walked in a snow storm to go get M at lunchtime because she only goes half days. A & K ate pizza at school and then got to walk home in a snowstorm and I got to go back out and shovel, even though I really didn't want to. I'd complain(more) but it IS winter and I DO live in Canada - so I guess I shouldn't let it get to me. This is our first really heavy snowfall though for this winter. I'm still not looking forward to going back out when the snow fall is over to shovel again and you know that S will still expect to be walked tomorrow, right?

On other topic(and trying not to complain) - the kids had their Christmas concert: They were cute and I enjoyed watching them. I can't say anything more on that if I follow the "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all." rule. Other than I got a hug from a friend of mines daughter - I thought it was very sweet of her to give me a hug :)

Okay that's it - I think I'll go find something else to do now otherwise it'll be back to grumbling :)

A month in review ...

Long time no update so I'll try to remember everything and get it all down here. M had her birthday and is now 5 years old and looking forward to Christmas. She loved her cake and got lots of Bratz stuff for her birthday to go with it.

Susie had another play date with little Mia a JackRusselXPug mix. another little dog with a big attitude like P(also a pug cross). This is Mia.Those shots are of Mia and S playing together. I love how S adjusts her play to how much the other dog will handle. It's nice to know I've done a good job and also that I've got a good tempered dog.I also want to share with you the funniest shot I have gotten of S to date:I thought it was too funny :)

Also in the past month we've had a couple play dates with my friend L's two dogs(she has two now). The three dogs got along really well. This is Bo her new dog, a 2 year old CollieXSheppard mix.You can see the Shep clearly in both Bo and S in the following two shots:Pretty aren't they? :)

S& Bo get along very well for a couple females and they play as well - although you have to know dogs to understand how they play. It doesn't always look like much fun :)Finally this is what happens when you're in the kitchen offering treats(in this case raw hamburger for our rawfed dogs).I felt very paid attention to!

Just so you don't think I've completely forgotten my dear sweet children I would like to share some shots that the girls took of themselves:
K in all her 13 year old glory.

M is a very goofy 5, but cute :)

Also because I realized I hadn't taken one last year here is our tree this year - there will be presents under the tree once I wrap them.I will take a final shot once the pile of presents dwarfs the tree.

Hope everyone is well - I will try to take more pictures of the kids and maybe a few on Christmas Day.

Cass :)
